The Imps in 2019-20

At Blow by Blow, we send our best wishes to Lincoln City FC as they kick off at their highest level in the pro football pyramid for 21 years.

Only four seasons ago Lincoln were languishing at non-league Conference level. Now, after two promotions in three seasons, they will be playing in Division One against the likes of Sunderland, Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town - relative luminaries who have all been top clubs in their day.

As everyone in Lincoln knows (and thousands elsewhere) the revival has been led by two youthful managers, Danny Cowley and his brother Nicky.

The old films we have found of the Imps date back to a time when they were more consistently pre-eminent.

In Bygone Lincoln DVD One, you can see them kick off on the first Saturday of league action after World War II, namely August 30th 1946. Lincoln were visitors to Hull City that day and we were given permission by Hull City library to use the film, clips from a nil-nil draw at a packed Boothferry Park.

By the time we reached Bygone Lincoln DVD Three, we had found wonderful footage of the Imps at Sincil Bank taken between 1948 and 1950 by a farmer from Spridlington who liked to attend matches with his cine camera and film from the old corner terrace.

For a few fleeting seconds, on the embankment behind what was then the railway stand, there’s a steam engine pulling goods waggons on the old avoiding line or “high line” - an evocative and nostalgic moment for older fans.

As the 2019-20 season gets underway, we’ve renewed our season tickets and our membership of the Gold section of the Lincoln City Supporters Trust. This membership means that we get an annual match day invite to the boardroom, and, on three other occasions, meetings with Danny Cowley and the club directors as well our own social gathering and buffet. If anyone is interested in joining the Gold Club, I can steer them in the right direction.
